What are the Differences Between Perfume, Aftershave, and Cologne?
Share
When it comes to choosing the right fragrance, it can be confusing to navigate through the different types of products available. The terms perfume, aftershave, and cologne are often used interchangeably, but they each serve different purposes. In this post, we’ll explore the differences between these products, their ingredients, and how to use them effectively.
1. Perfume (Eau de Parfum & Eau de Toilette)
Perfume is the most concentrated form of fragrance and is designed to last longer. The term 'perfume' is often used broadly but can be broken down into two main categories:
-
Eau de Parfum (EDP): EDP contains a higher concentration of fragrance oils, typically around 15-20%. This makes it long-lasting, with the scent lingering for 6-8 hours or more. EDPs are perfect for those who want a noticeable and enduring fragrance. All our perfumes are EDP and contain 18-25% fragrance oils.
-
Eau de Toilette (EDT): Slightly less concentrated than EDP, EDT typically contains 5-15% fragrance oil, making it lighter and more suitable for daily wear. While it doesn't last as long (around 4-6 hours), it’s perfect for a subtle and refreshing scent throughout the day.
When to Use:
Perfume is ideal for special occasions or when you want to leave a lasting impression, or daily use as all of us do. It’s often applied to pulse points like the wrists, neck, and behind the ears.
2. Aftershave
Aftershave serves a completely different purpose compared to perfume or cologne. It is designed primarily for use after shaving to soothe the skin and reduce irritation.
-
Ingredients: Aftershaves contain a lower concentration of fragrance, typically around 1-3%, making them much lighter in scent. They also include soothing agents like aloe vera, witch hazel, or alcohol to disinfect and calm the skin after shaving.
-
Scent Longevity: The fragrance of aftershave usually fades within an hour or two because its main focus is on skincare rather than long-lasting scent.
When to Use:
Aftershave should be applied immediately after shaving to calm and protect your skin. It’s a good option if you prefer a subtle fragrance that doesn’t linger throughout the day.
3. Cologne (Eau de Cologne)
Cologne is often associated with men’s fragrances, but it refers to the concentration of fragrance rather than the gender of the wearer.
-
Concentration: Eau de Cologne typically contains around 2-5% fragrance oil, making it one of the lightest fragrance types. Because of its lower concentration, cologne is often used for a light, refreshing scent that doesn’t overpower.
-
Scent Longevity: Colognes usually last for 2-3 hours, so they require reapplication throughout the day if you want to maintain the scent.
When to Use:
Cologne is good for everyday wear, however most prefer the stronger scent of perfume.
Choosing the Right Product for You
The main difference between perfume, aftershave, and cologne comes down to concentration and purpose. If you’re looking for a long-lasting scent, opt for Eau de Parfum. For lighter, more casual wear, Eau de Toilette or Cologne is ideal. And if you’re dealing with post-shave irritation, reach for an Aftershave.
